How to Pass the SAFE MLO Test
Finish your 20-hour NMLS-approved course, learn the five outline areas by weight, memorize the federal deadlines and the math formulas, then take timed 120-question practice exams until you score well above the 75% you need. Book the test when you are passing practice exams comfortably, not before.

Step by step
- Complete the required education. At least 20 hours of NMLS-approved pre-licensing education (12 U.S.C. §5104(c)). Your state may require more.
- Study by weight. Origination activities (27%) and federal law (24%) are half the test. See the study guide for a topic checklist.
- Memorize the deadlines. Loan Estimate, Closing Disclosure, rescission, and adverse action timing. Use the TRID timelines.
- Drill the math. Use the formula sheet and the math practice questions.
- Practice by topic. Work the free question sets for federal law, Uniform State Content, general mortgage knowledge, origination, and ethics.
- Read every explanation, including for questions you got right.
- Take timed full-length exams. 190 minutes for 120 questions is about 1.6 minutes per question.
On test day
- Answer every question. The 5 unscored pretest questions are mixed in, and you cannot tell which they are.
- Don't get stuck. Move on and come back if time allows.
- Read every "NOT" and "EXCEPT" twice.
If you don't pass
You can retest after 30 days following a 1st or 2nd failure, and after 180 days following a 3rd consecutive failure. Each attempt costs $110. Use your section score ranges to pick what to study.
